    here is a question, probably one that is asked very often. I dont feel this warm feeling so easily and I am not sure if thats that or I am just feeling the sensations that already reside in the chest area. No memory that evokes that really comes to mind, a cute animal etc bring more of a head focused or smile sensation and even that after 3 seconds is seen as just sensation and not particularly positive or negative.

    • @DhammasukhaOrg
      @DhammasukhaOrg 15 днів тому

      Yes its asked very often - Yep! So first sit for 2-3 minutes just doing nothing. Then smile for awhile. Then bring up the baby or anything that evokes the feeling. Just bathe in the feeling like you are happily doing a soak in a warm bubbly hot tub, Enjoy it. Don't 'try' but just feel the metta - Nothing to do -nowhere to go. Youmight not feel anything for 10-15 minutes! Just be patient and don't try to hard. Let it come to you. Smile all of the sitting and feel the smile. No goals, no trying-just doing.

    A question about the person we direct our Metta towards (the spiritual friend). Bhante Vimalaramsi seemed pretty serious that they were of the same sex. I'm guessing that was because we don't want to have any confusion about longing, craving or lust towards them? Does that instruction hold solid for those who are same sex attracted?

    • @davidjohnson8218

At around 21:41 Antra says "he did not have greed and hatred anymore because he was a bodhisatta at that time so those taints had been overcome and extinguished" but he still had doubt, sloth and torpor, fear, elation, etc.. Does this mean the Bodhisatta was an Anagami at that stage? Would that mean future Buddhas are Anagamis when they make their aspiration and receive a prediction of success as a future Buddha?

    Forgiveness is wonderful. One important form of forgiveness is letting go of negligence by the caretaker. About this, what we really need is for our Sustainer to forgives us: to keep us from His negligence. "It's better for the baker to forgive us, than for the hungry to forgive himself." Find the God who will protect you from tormenting decay by negligence. Seek the forgiveness of this God, neglect not the God with higher acclaim and more power than man. For if the God of the living neglects you, the breath of life will depart from you. Again, neglect not the God of life. May the God Most High forgive you as you have forgiven yourselves. Have mercy on yourself and seek His forgiveness.

      @davidjohnson8218 Місяць тому

      Perhaps but this is a common practice in Thailand and Burma. In thailand it is said you must be a monk for a short period before you become a man. The previous King was a monk temporarily and then became the king. There are definitely stories of monks disrobing in the suttas and then coming back.

      Here is a comment based on a search of the suttas, " there are instances in the Buddhist texts where monks disrobed and later became ordained again. One such example is found in the Anguttara Nikaya, where the text discusses a monk who, influenced by lust, leaves the monastic life but is later able to return and ordain again. This reflects the nuanced understanding of human behavior and spiritual development in the early Buddhist community, recognizing that individuals may struggle and sometimes fail, but also can return to the path." In the vinaya the only way you are banned from the monastic community is 1) you don't meet the criteria to become a monk 2) you break one of the 4 Pārājika rules in which you are disrobed and never allowed to return.

    1:06:50 Here Delson does an incredibly beautiful job elaborating what Anatta means. I'm by no means a Buddhist scholar, or even really a Buddhist, but have been fascinated by this area for years. Many people throw around the word Anatta and I have NEVER heard it explained like this. That is to say that what Delson describes here is the notion that Anatta is implying "that which is not the self" and not explicitly "no self" or "without self" as I have always heard. This seems almost like a subtle difference, but to me carries enormous implications. It implies that we are not striving to get rid of a self, or see that "self" does not exist, but that we are looking to see what is always already here in mind (and beyond mind in the case of Nibbana) and how it doesn't imply selfhood or self-ing. If I understand correctly then would be a critical illustration of what is implied by the core understanding of delusion in Buddhism. I hope I'm conveying this correctly, but the frame shift for me has been enormously refreshing.

    • @davidjohnson8218

      John - right on! Its a great part of his talk. I might create a short with this subject. Its interesting to not that the word "atta" just means essence. Is THAT even a self? Maybe its just the essence of the personality. Interesting to discuss. Thank you!
